If we had a dime for every time we read about the rise and fall of one of our favorite child celebrities, I swear this country would be in the black instead of the red. And what is so heartbreaking is that the very same child stars we grew up watching, loving, and idolizing end up letting us down in ways we never would fathom. We tend to worship a god-like quality in these individuals but at some point they change beyond recognition. Why and how do they change? How is this related to Horror? Let me illustrate a very critical point and let you figure it out.
As I was watching The Exorcist the other night, my mind kept on pondering the questions, why and how? Why did young and cutesy Regan MacNeil become the target for the Devil's dart game and how did it enter her body? We know Regan wasn't at fault however or was she? Was her unhappy and lonely soul a key for the Devil to enter her body and take over her completely? Did it see something vulnerable to complete consumption?
Yes she was normal at one point. She was innocent. She was sweet. Though betrayed by her own father, she was the apple of her mother's eye. She had a face only a mother could love.
And this my friends...is EXACTLY how it starts. Let me throw out Britney Spears from the mix here.
No longer the Mouseketeer from The Micky Mouse Club, a young, vibrant, sweet girl next door parades around in a scantily clad Catholic School Girl uniform, topping the music charts, and record sales soar. Britney Spears becomes the household name. Every girl wants to be her. Every guy wants to date her. Throughout the years, the topic of Britney Spears' burgeoning sexuality becomes the media's focal point. But that's not so bad because now the rest of the world has already fallen in love with her. Did her scantily clad skin bearing outfits influence her success? Does sex sell? Maybe, but Britney Spears now has the world by its heartstrings. All her fans watch her walk down the path to becoming a legend. There was something about her the world could not let go of...
No we didn't expect Britney to stay a virgin forever. But whatever happened to the sweet girl who proclaimed her purity by confessing she's still a virgin with morals? Like I said, we didn't expect her to be a virgin for the rest of her life. But somewhere along the line, Britney Spears started to change. Her videos getting a tad bit sexier was not an issue at all. Her quickie wedding to a friend that lasted maybe 24 hours, followed by an actual marriage to a loser wasn't either. Nor was the fact that she finally decided to let the world know she actually does engage in sex and popped out two adorable boys. From Mouseketeer to MILF and still I don't see anything wrong with that. She's human after all. She was embedded in the public eye and was becoming a legend. But sometimes stardom is not what it's cracked up to be...
You go from crackers to caviar, chocolate milk to Don Perignon, bicycles to private jets, birthday parties with a clown in attendance to full blown galas and red carpet events, getting pictures taken for your High School yearbook to paparazzi stalking you while you take a piss sideways, and then ask yourself, "WTF am I doing?" "Who am I"? Your life is no longer your own. The Hollywood Hills are definitely a sight to see and so is Beverly Hills. But behind every star you walk on, lies a name with a story behind it. Some good, some tragic. Some of the names on the Hollywood Stars have died tragically in the hands of drugs and suicide. Hollywood is the city of lights, cameras, and action. But it has more than just lights. Hollywood has jaws. And if you are a young celebrity like Britney Spears, sweet old girl from Louisiana, in due time, Hollywood will swallow you whole. Hollywood is The Devil...

Since Britney Spears' meltdown, she is no longer the same to me. She has made a comeback since, but the comeback was gradual and it still looks as though its processing. In every picture I see of her, she looks despondent if not dead in the eyes. My heart honestly breaks for her, the same way it did for Regan MacNeil....
Britney Spears is of course, one of the many casualties of the Devil named Hollywood..
