Hatchet For The Honeymoon (1970) - Honeymoon Periods Are Not Meant To Last You Know?

Mildred and John...
Sitting in a tree..
K-I-S-S-I-N-G..
First comes love...
Then comes marriage...

What comes next?

Not a baby in a baby carriage, needless to say. Although John Harrington, Handsome Harrington, may very well be a baby in his own mind. Like a lot of men, he suffers from "Mommy Issues", a.k.a. an Oedipus Complex. He was a Momma's boy at one given point of his childhood, until his Father died, and his mother remarried. When he catches them making love, young John slays them both with a hatchet. His mind snaps entirely.

His own impaired cognitive judgement, leads him to marry Mildred, an older, shrew of a woman, who owns a bridal dress shop, hence making it convenient for John to murder young beautiful brides to be with a hatchet. John is impotent and secretly depends on Mildred for support as he would his own mother. She knows John is nothing without her, although he speaks of getting divorced from her. Mildred won't hear any of that nonsense. She has no intention of letting John go. Not now, not ever.

Beautiful brides to be in their wedding gowns start to taper off. John is the prime suspect. He falls in love with beautiful Helen, but Mildred is watching his every move like a hawk. John figures the only way he will ever truly be free from his shrew of a wife is to hatchet her to death...

'Till death do us part...

How handsome am I now?

But Mildred's soul won't rest in peace. She is never going to leave John. And John will never be able to leave her. Because now, Mildred's ghost will torment him into allowing everybody else except for him to see her.

"Oh, my mother isn't talking to herself, she is talking to your wife at the table".

John decides to kill Mildred once again by taking her remains out of her grave and burning them into ashes for him to carry in a handbag.  It makes no difference however. He tries to bring Helen into the same room where he murdered the other women, so he can hatchet her to death too. She resists the blow and John experiences a very profound flashback of him murdering his mother and stepfather.. His mind snaps back into reality. Helen, who was posing as a model/employee of the Bridal Dress shop, was actually an undercover cop.  John confesses everything to the authorities and is being driven to jail. Thinking maybe now he is free, Mildred's ghost appears and curses him again, this time for only him to see her, nobody else. She will never leave him. She will always stay by his side. Here and in Hell for all eternity...

Don't become a marriage cynic just yet. I mean if you don't want to kill your own spouse every now and then, it wouldn't be a true marriage, right? 😜
