Images (1972) - Who Is My Husband?

It starts with a cryptic prank phone call. Cathryn hears on the receiving end of the phone call that her husband Hugh is having an affair. She is distraught as Hugh comes home to console her, only after looking up and seeing the image of another man. She runs out of the room, only to see her husband again, whom can't understand what is going on with his wife. Being the oh so loving and compassionate husband, Hugh takes Cathryn to the countryside where she can work on illustrations for her book. He believes that stress and pregnancy are the main culprits to his wife's hysterics. But a day in the countryside forms into a nightmare as Cathryn begins to suffer auditory and visual hallucinations. An image of her deceased lover Rene takes place of Hugh passing through the kitchen. What exactly is Miss Cathryn seeing and why? Her paranoia and delusions only begin to amplify as her ex lover and neighbor Marcel, with his daughter Susannah, stop by to visit. Now Cathryn cannot tell who is who and what roles all these men in her life seem to be playing in her mind. She sees Hugh, then Rene, now Marcel. All these men transform right before her. Rene dares Cathryn to kill him assuming she may have the guts to do it, and she fires the gun. Only she did not shoot Rene, only Hugh's camera. Susannah finds the camera in pieces.

Hmmm..so many men. One woman. One mind. One conscience....

Cathryn goes to the waterfall and sees her body double staring back at her. She later drops Hugh off to the train station where he can leave to go on his business trip. When she returns home, she finds Marcel waiting for her ready to make love to her. She stabs him to death. The following morning, she invites a local and elderly man walking his dog for coffee, thinking maybe Marcel's death was all a figment of her imagination, however, the man declines the invite. When Susannah stops by the house later on, she tells Cathryn that her father did not come home. So could it be that maybe Cathryn really did kill Marcel and she was not just imagining it? However, much to Cathryn's relief, Marcel did return home drunk after midnight. When Cathryn drives Susannah back home, Marcel attempts to talk with her but she drives off. On the desolate road, Cathryn once again sees her doppelganger. At home, Rene and Marcel who are deceased await her. She leaves again only to find her body double once again on the road. The body double begs to get into the car and they both look at each other and speak in unison. Cathryn hits her doppelganger with her car where it falls off the cliff hitting each rock after rock, dying a bloody and horrific death. Is it the end? Who was this body double? Why was it after Cathryn? Cathryn then drives back to her home, away from the countryside, and takes a shower. Who follows her there? Not Hugh. Not Rene. Not Marcel. But her body double. Cathryn screams as she exclaims "I killed you". The body double responds, "Not me". In the end, you see Hugh's body at the base of the waterfall.

Now what could all of this mean? Was Cathryn schizophrenic? Was she prone to horrifying auditory and visual hallucinations? Or could it just be, maybe her conscience? Maybe we create our own images and contend with the part of ourselves which we do not like. Was Cathryn and Hugh's marriage built on a foundation of sand perhaps? He supposedly was not faithful nor was she? So she kills off each and every lover trying to save Hugh. Though in the end, in a final attempt to eradicate her own inner demon, she killed off what could have been the root cause of her problems.
