The Twilight Zone - Spur Of The Moment - 1964

What do you do when being pursued by an eccentric stranger on horseback? You can run of course. But you can't hide. At least not from the truth. Eighteen year old heiress, Anne Henderson is out horseback riding when all of a sudden she encounters a much older woman dressed in all black. The woman screams out her name and terrified, Anne races home still being pursued by the woman in black. What does this strange woman want with Anne? And why is she trying to frighten her? If this woman is a stranger at all...

Anne is engaged to be married to Robert, a successful investment broker, whom her parents feel is the perfect suitor for their little princess. But Anne is still holding a torch for David, her ex, who has won her father's approval with not a warm and welcoming embrace, but a loaded hand gun. Welcome to the family son. We won't fund your wedding, just your funeral. David pleads with Anne not to proceed with her marriage to Robert.

Fast forward 25 years later and Anne is a miserable mid-aged, bitter and belligerent alcoholic. She debases her father's memory  and blames him for never teaching her the value and significance of actually earning her own keep. Poor little rich girl huh? But get this. Despite her accusations against her father, she is married to her true love David. So she really did marry the man of her dreams much against her family's dismay. But she is miserable. He turns out to be an abusive loser. Looks like the honeymoon has long since been over. Maybe she should have trusted her parents' judgement when it came to men. But rather than owning up to her own mistakes, she blames her father. She is unhappy and filled with regrets. If she could do it again, she would. So she tries...

When people say that they have their own demons to contend with, maybe it is more than just a metaphorical phrase. In Anne Henderson's case, she wanted to so desperately turn back time and warn her younger self that she was making a decision that she will regret for the rest of her life, that she ended up scaring herself away.

Moral of the story: Think twice before making a life changing decision you may regret, because your own ghost will always come back to haunt you. You can run but you can't hide, especially from yourself...
